Theo Baart | Werklust | The book

Theo Baart photographed the transformation of the polder landscape around Schiphol Airport. With text and images, he shows how the once prosperous agricultural area has been replaced by an ensemble of infrastructure, industrial estates, runways and residential areas due to urbanisation and globalisation. The rich sea clay has been covered with a layer of asphalt.

We worked with Theo to combine text and images into a book. The collaboration between photographer and designer may differ from the working method compared to that with other clients. Normally, it is our job to make a client's issue visually clear and attractive in a form that lends itself best to this.

However, when realising a photo book, the photographer is the leading factor; it is his story in images - and in this case also in text. The photographer determines the layout. The rhythm is determined together with the designer. The designer advises on the layout: sometimes an image is best displayed when it is placed completely sloping, other times an image needs some white margin around it and sometimes images reinforce each other when placed next to each other. We also determine the typography so that the whole is accessible and clearly displayed in accordance with the book. All in all a more serving role, but certainly no less challenging.

Above is a small overview of the rhythm of the book; the choices we made to let the image come into its own as best as possible. Sometimes sloping, sometimes with a white border or white space on the side. Sometimes images placed opposite each other. This variation creates a surprising layout, which is also balanced.
