Theo Baart | Cary Markerink | Nagele [revisited]
The village of Nagele in the Noordoostpolder is a striking example of post-war construction: a new village on new land. The village was intended for farm workers and was designed and built in a grand gesture by architects such as Aldo van Eyck, Gerrit Rietveld and Mien Ruys.
However modern the layout of the village was, it could not escape developments in the countryside that the designers had not foreseen: increased mobility, economies of scale, mechanisation in agriculture and the arrival of people from abroad.
Theo Baart and Cary Markerink have been following the changes in Nagele since 1984. In 1988 they published Nagele [N.O.P.], which was also designed by us. The publication Nagele [revisited] is the successor. Using photographs from family albums from the pioneer period and their photography from the years 1986 to 2006, they show how an inward-looking agricultural village changed into a commuter community.
